AS IF / AS THOUGH (যেন)

বেশিরভাগ সময়ই আমরা as if এবং as though এর বেলায় কিছু fixed structure ব্যবহার করে ফেলি, যেমন as if/ as though এর আগের clause টি present tense এ হলে পরের clause টি past indefinite tense এ হয় এবং আগের clause টি past indefinite tense এ হলে পরের clause টি past perfect tense এ হয়।এটা অবশ্য ভুল না, কিন্তু এখানে আরো কিছু ব্যাপার আছে।

আসুন এই ব্যাপারগুলো একটু ভাল করে দেখে নেই।

as if এবং as though উভয়ের এর অর্থ হল ‘যেন’। এ ধরনের sentence এ দু’ধরনের ঘটনা থাকতে পারে- বাস্তব (real situation) এবং অবাস্তব (unreal situation)। কোনটা real situation আর কোনটা unreal situation সেটা sentence এর context থেকে বুঝতে হবে। তবে মনে রাখবেন বাংলাদেশের competitive পরীক্ষাগুলোতে শুধুমাত্র (৯৯%) unreal situation থেকে প্রশ্ন করা হয়!!!

1. Real situation অর্থাৎ বাস্তব ঘটনার বেলায় as if এবং as though এর বেলায় আলাদা বা special কোন rule  নেই, স্বাভাবিকভাবেই যা হবার তাই হবে।

Examples:

Present: She looks as though she knows the answer. ( তার expression দেখে মনে হচ্ছে সে সত্যি সত্যি answer টি জানে, এবং সত্যিকার অর্থে সে হয়ত answer টি জানে।)

Past: She looked as if she knew the answer. ( তার expression দেখে মনে হচ্ছিল সে সত্যি সত্যি answer টি জানত, এবং সত্যিকার অর্থে সে হয়ত answer টি জানত।)

He looks as if he has finished the test.

He looked as though he was leaving.

2. কিন্তু যদি situation টা unreal হয় (অর্থাৎ সত্যি সত্যি না হয়ে ভান করা বা ভাব ধরা বোঝায়) তাহলে তার জন্য আমাদের সবার জানা structure গুলো ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

i. as if/ as though এর আগের clause টি যদি present tense এ হয় তাহলে পরের clause past indefinite tense হবে (be verb ব্যবহার করতে হলে সবক্ষেত্রে were বসবে; was বসবে না, যদিও modern grammar was ব্যবহার করলে আপত্তি করে না।)।

Examples:

The old lady dresses as if it were winter even in the summer.

Peter talks to his dog as though it understood him.

He looks as if he knew the answer.

ii. as if/ as though এর আগের clause টি যদি past indefinite tense এ হয় তাহলে পরের clause টি past perfect tense হবে (যদিও modern English grammar পরের clause টি ও past indefinite tense এ পছন্দ করে।)

Examples:

Bethe looked as if she had seen a ghost.

He seemed as if he hadn’t slept for days.

He looked as though he had run ten miles.

Saimon talked about the contest as if he had won the grand prize.

Important Tips: as if এবং as though এর rule থেকে যখনই প্রশ্ন করা হোক না কেন শুধুমাত্র ২ টি জায়গা থেকে প্রশ্ন করা হয়- as if এবং as though এর আগের verb এবং পরের verb। পরীক্ষার হলে যদি আপনার জানা থাকে কোন rule এর specific কোন জায়গা থেকে প্রশ্ন করা হয় তাহলে অনেক সময় বেঁচে যায়!!
